chimis at Allsup's

Good road food is decidedly not healthy, crap you would not eat at home in part because you'd have to do your grocery shopping or fine dining in a truck stop or gas station. I'm partial to beer nuts when the asphalt calls. Allsup's is infamous (in a good way) for its burritos, road food that is not healthy (check) but is pretty dang good.

Starting in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1956, Lonnie and Barbara Allsup opened up their first small, drive-in grocery store called Lonnie's Drive-In Grocery. After expanding and selling out to 7-Eleven in 1963, Lonnie and Barb moved to Clovis and started Allsup's.

Legend has it that the flagship Allsup's wasn't having much success selling their burritos until an employee fried them in the fryer and sold them out instantly. That was back in September of 1974, so this is the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Allsup burrito (which technically isn't a burrito at all; it's a chimichanga). The original was ground beef and bean joined later in the fry-basket with shredded beef and chicken versions.

And how are they? Dang good! They offer hot sauce, but I suggest you pass and enjoy them au natural. The fried crunchiness of the tortilla with flavorful filling is hard to resist. I'm partial to the chimis with chiles, which had great cheesy-chile flavor.

Now where did I put those antacid tablets...
