the rusty house

 

On the way down the hill to Alamo, we've caught glimpses of a rusty, modern house perched high above High Rolls. As it turns out, the house is off of Alta Vista Road (we've lusted after several not-for-sale lots up there) and is up for sale, which means we can peek inside!

The listing is here, and it's rather spectacular but with a steep price (~$800K for a 1-1 where the first 1 is a Murphy bed). The place is more of an art studio than a home, although I reckon it can be converted into more of a traditional living space. 

There's a lot of bizarrely bad real-estate photography here, even for high-end properties like this one. The perspectives are off, no leveling or lining, poor use (if any) of landscape. Yikes.

  A few years ago, we traveled up to Newfoundland to avoid hurricanes in Vacation Option A (Florida Keys) and see where Leif Erikson "discovered" the New World some 500 years before Columbus. Toward the end of our trip, we spent a couple days in St Johns and, ironically, were hit with the remnants of a hurricane. So we stayed inside our VRBO, drank Moose Joose, and listened the owner's excellently diverse collection of LPs (from Dead Kennedys to Patsy Cline) while it stormed outside. the reliabilty of rainwater harvesting in cloudcroft, new mexico

  Cloudcroft, New Mexico, is perched at the top of the Sacramento Mountains at nearly 9,000 feet above sea level. From the right vantage point, you can see White Sands in the Tularosa Basin as well as Alamogordo nestled against the foothills. On a clear day, you can see the Organ Mountains this side of Las Cruces. On a clear night, you can see the lights of El Paso reflected off the atmosphere. Cloudcroft has spent many a year struggling with its water supply, fed by springs and water wells. Given Cloudcroft's home at the top of the mountain, the springshed and aquifers beneath are not that big and are susceptible to drought. At one point, Cloudcroft pined to have the nation's first direct potable reuse plant (and the second in the world!) before a bad concrete pour (and rain?) put the project on the back burner.
