It's rather amazing what a fallen weather balloon monitoring the atmosphere for Russian atomic blasts hath wrought. The entire town of Roswell is alien-crazy with lampposts with alien eyes, alien murals galore, and The International UFO Museum and Research Center. It's all in good fun, although there's clearly some tongue not in cheek.

The UFO Museum is a worthy stop just for the delightful cheesiness of it, excellent t-shirt collection, and the bathrooms (hot tip: purchased entry is good for all day in case you need access to them bathrooms early). The museum has photos of the "Roswell Incident" with the rancher and cop perched over the wreckage, which had me thinking "Surely intergalactic travel requires more than balsa wood and tin foil..." The UFO-themed McDonalds is also a must-stop with a couple murals and silver men holding court outside.

I chuckled as I drove out of town about the harmless nature of this conspiracy theory but also wondered if this was the beginning of the end of truth where every damn thing is a conspiracy. Maybe these aliens weren't friendly after all...

  A few years ago, we traveled up to Newfoundland to avoid hurricanes in Vacation Option A (Florida Keys) and see where Leif Erikson "discovered" the New World some 500 years before Columbus. Toward the end of our trip, we spent a couple days in St Johns and, ironically, were hit with the remnants of a hurricane. So we stayed inside our VRBO, drank Moose Joose, and listened the owner's excellently diverse collection of LPs (from Dead Kennedys to Patsy Cline) while it stormed outside. can you drive your tesla from austin to cloudcroft?

  The short answer is "Yes!" I've been able to make it with no problems with a Model 3 and, more recently, a Model Y, both Long Range versions. Driving Teslas along major highways is not a problem anywhere, but that run from the last supercharger to Cloudcroft is a nailbiter for a newbie. On my first trip to Cloudcroft some four years ago, the in-car router sent me straight to Cloudcroft via Austin to Junction, Junction to Fort Stockton, Fort Stockton to Pecos, and Pecos to Cloudcroft. The first time we made that last run from Pecos to Cloudcroft was a nailbiter since the car said we'd arrive with about 20 miles left in the "tank." Did the range estimator account for the increasing slope and decreasing temperature? It appears it did since we showed up with about 30 miles left. These days, the on-board computer sends you to El Paso and then up through Alamogordo. This is less risky since it is 108 miles instead of 213 miles, but it adds an hour (or more) to y...
